Possible Reasons Why Your Gas Water Heater Keeps Turning Off

Possible Reasons Why Your Gas Water Heater Keeps Turning Off

When it comes to water heaters, one of the most common issues that homeowners face is a gas water heater that constantly turns off. This is a problem that can be both inconvenient and potentially dangerous, so it’s important to understand the potential causes and take steps to address the issue.

The Potential Causes Why Your Gas Water Heater Keeps Turning Off

  1. A Faulty Gas Valve

The first potential cause of a gas water heater constantly turning off is a faulty gas valve. The gas valve is what controls the flow of gas to the water heater, and if it is not working properly, it can cause the water heater to turn off.

  1. A Faulty Burner

The second potential cause of a gas water heater constantly turning off is a faulty or clogged burner. The burner is responsible for igniting the gas that powers the water heater, and if it is not working properly, it can cause the water heater to shut off.

  1. A Faulty Thermocouple

The third potential cause of a gas water heater constantly turning off is a faulty thermocouple. The thermocouple is responsible for sensing the temperature of the water heater and signaling the gas valve to open or close when needed. If the thermocouple is not working properly, it can cause the water heater to shut off.

What to Do If Your Water Heater Keeps Turning Off

  1. Check the Water Temperature

If the water temperature is too low, the water heater may not be able to heat the water efficiently and will shut off. Check the water temperature and make sure it is at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

  1. Check the Pilot Light

If the pilot light is out, it can prevent the water heater from staying on. Check the pilot light and make sure it is lit. If it is not lit, you will need to relight it.

  1. Check the Thermostat

The thermostat is responsible for controlling the temperature of the water. Check the thermostat and make sure it is set to the desired temperature. If the thermostat is not set correctly, the water heater may not be able to reach the desired temperature and will shut off.

  1. Check the Gas Supply Line

If the gas supply line is blocked or damaged, it can prevent the water heater from getting the necessary gas to heat the water. Check the gas supply line and make sure it is open and in working order.

  1. Check the Ventilation

The ventilation system of your water heater is responsible for providing the necessary airflow for the burning of the gas. If the ventilation is blocked or clogged, it can prevent the water heater from staying on. Check the ventilation and make sure it is open and in working order.

If the issue persists after troubleshooting these steps, it may be time to call a professional plumber. A plumber can diagnose the issue and make sure it gets fixed properly and safely.

Our San Jose Condo had the original heat and AC system from 1978. New Pipes came recommended by a good friend and we were grateful that New Pipes did the replacement work. We needed all of the vents replaced as well. They were so clean and did an outstanding job and the price was very reasonable. We also used New Pipes to install a new AC system in our mother's house. Once again, they did a great job in a very timely manner. We will use them again!

I recently had a slab leak, and our HOA management company selected New Pipes to do the investigation and plumbing resolution. Once the word was go, Patrick was on site to cap the old pipes and stop the leakage. It ended up being a tough job and took 4 shifts to fix it - there were more pipes than thought as it's a pretty old complex. Maybe there was a shift in the earth that jostled things around. At any rate, Patrick went above and beyond to fix everything, and was professional and personable throughout the work. I commend him highly, and thank the whole team that helped resolve this concerning issue. You're the best!

Well, this one inevitable call had to take place yesterday morning. Adam shows up within an hour. He was extremely professional and knowledgeable. He was able to clear our kitchen pipes up quickly (they were clogged on the outside part of our house) and left no mess, NO TRACE. (This I've not seen from our other contractor workers) Thank you Adam and New Pipes for the great work! We'll highly recommend!
