Expert Pipe Replacement Solutions for Your Home and Business

Common Signs That It's Time to Repipe

While minor plumbing repairs are common in any property, persistent or systemic issues often point to a deeper problem: deteriorating pipes. Here are some red flags that may indicate it’s time to repipe your home or commercial building:

Low Water Pressure

A sudden or gradual drop in water pressure may suggest internal corrosion or buildup in your pipes.

Rusty or Discolored Water

Water with a brown, yellow, or reddish tint often signals rust or sediment from old galvanized steel or iron pipes.

Frequent Leaks

Constant repairs for pinhole leaks or visible water damage could mean your piping system is failing from within.

Strange Odors or Taste

Unpleasant metallic or earthy tastes and smells can come from corroded or contaminated pipes.

Noisy Pipes

Banging or clanking sounds when you turn water on or off may point to loose or deteriorating pipes.

Visible Corrosion or Flaking

If you see greenish or bluish stains on exposed pipes, this may be a sign of corrosion.

What Is Repiping?

Repiping is the process of replacing old, damaged, or outdated water lines with new, high-quality pipes. It can be done partially—targeting a specific area—or as a full-house or full-building overhaul. This service involves:

  • Shutting off and draining the water system
  • Removing the old pipes or bypassing them
  • Installing new supply lines (cold and hot)
  • Pressure testing the new system
  • Patching walls or ceilings affected by the installation

In most residential cases, a repipe can be completed within 2–5 days. Larger commercial or multi-unit properties may take longer, depending on size, layout, and material choices. Our team at New Pipes works efficiently to complete repiping projects with minimal impact on your schedule or occupants.

Most Common Types of Pipes and What They Are Best Used For

Not all pipes are created equal. The right material for your project depends on your budget, property type, and water needs. Here’s a breakdown of the most popular piping materials we install and what they’re best suited for:

1. PEX (Cross-linked Polyethylene)

  • Best for: Residential repiping, tight spaces, and remodels
  • Advantages: Flexible, resistant to scale and chlorine, won’t corrode, easy to install
  • Lifespan: 40–50 years
  • Notes: Ideal for retrofits and homes where minimal disruption is a priority

2. Copper (Type L and Type M)

  • Best for: Homes and businesses where longevity and reliability are key
  • Advantages: Durable, bacteria-resistant, recyclable, long-lasting
  • Lifespan: 50–70+ years
  • Notes: More expensive than PEX, but preferred for many high-end or exposed applications

3. CPVC (Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride)

  • Best for: Hot and cold water lines in residential applications
  • Advantages: Affordable, corrosion-resistant, heat-tolerant
  • Lifespan: 40–50 years
  • Notes: Not as flexible as PEX and can become brittle over time

4. Galvanized Steel (obsolete)

  • Used in: Homes built before the 1970s
  • Disadvantages: Prone to rust, corrosion, internal buildup, and contamination
  • Recommendation: Should be fully replaced as part of your repiping project

When we evaluate your repiping project, we’ll recommend the best material based on water pressure, exposure, budget, and building code requirements.

Benefits of Repiping

Investing in a full or partial repipe comes with several important benefits that go beyond stopping leaks. Here are the top advantages of a professional repiping service:

1. Improved Water Pressure

New pipes restore proper water flow, ensuring that your faucets, showers, and appliances all operate efficiently.

2. Cleaner, Safer Water

Replacing corroded or contaminated lines improves the taste, odor, and overall safety of your drinking water.

3. Lower Utility Bills

Fixing leaks and restoring water efficiency can significantly reduce monthly water bills and prevent costly damage repairs.

4. Enhanced Property Value

Buyers prefer homes and buildings with updated plumbing systems. Repiping can increase your resale value and make inspections smoother.

5. Reduced Maintenance Costs

Say goodbye to frequent plumber visits. A new pipe system drastically reduces the need for ongoing repairs.

6. Peace of Mind

Knowing your plumbing system is up to code and built to last gives you confidence and security for years to come.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Our San Jose Condo had the original heat and AC system from 1978. New Pipes came recommended by a good friend and we were grateful that New Pipes did the replacement work. We needed all of the vents replaced as well. They were so clean and did an outstanding job and the price was very reasonable. We also used New Pipes to install a new AC system in our mother's house. Once again, they did a great job in a very timely manner. We will use them again!

I recently had a slab leak, and our HOA management company selected New Pipes to do the investigation and plumbing resolution. Once the word was go, Patrick was on site to cap the old pipes and stop the leakage. It ended up being a tough job and took 4 shifts to fix it - there were more pipes than thought as it's a pretty old complex. Maybe there was a shift in the earth that jostled things around. At any rate, Patrick went above and beyond to fix everything, and was professional and personable throughout the work. I commend him highly, and thank the whole team that helped resolve this concerning issue. You're the best!

Well, this one inevitable call had to take place yesterday morning. Adam shows up within an hour. He was extremely professional and knowledgeable. He was able to clear our kitchen pipes up quickly (they were clogged on the outside part of our house) and left no mess, NO TRACE. (This I've not seen from our other contractor workers) Thank you Adam and New Pipes for the great work! We'll highly recommend!

Risks of Unrepaired Leaks

Even a minor leak can lead to major damage over time. Here’s what can happen when leaks go unrepaired:

1. Water Damage

Leaks can warp hardwood flooring, stain drywall, and saturate insulation—leading to expensive repair bills.

2. Mold and Mildew

Excess moisture creates a perfect environment for mold growth, which can trigger respiratory issues and allergic reactions.

3. Foundation Damage

Prolonged leaks under your slab can erode soil and crack foundations—putting your entire structure at risk.

4. Electrical Hazards

Water near electrical wiring or appliances poses serious safety risks, including fire hazards or electrocution.

5. Higher Water Bills

Ongoing leaks can waste hundreds of gallons a month—skyrocketing your water usage and costs.

The faster you act, the more damage you prevent. Our 24-hour emergency plumbing team is always ready to help.

FAQs About Repiping

If you’re dealing with isolated leaks or minor corrosion, a repair may suffice. But if your home or building has widespread issues, aging pipes, or water quality concerns, repiping is often the most effective long-term solution.

For most residential homes, repiping takes 2 to 5 business days. Commercial and multi-unit projects vary depending on size and complexity. We work efficiently to minimize disruption and communicate timelines clearly.

In most cases, no. We plan repiping in stages to maintain partial water access during the day and restore full access each evening. For commercial and HOA clients, we offer after-hours scheduling when needed.

Costs vary based on the size of the building, number of fixtures, piping material, and accessibility. We provide detailed estimates after an on-site inspection so you know exactly what to expect.

It depends on your policy and the cause of pipe failure. We’re happy to provide documentation and work with your insurer if a claim is applicable.
